Rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty) is one of the most common cosmetic operations performed worldwide. It can be performed as a reconstructive procedure to correct a birth defect, to repair an injury or a broken nose, or for purely cosmetic reasons.
Rhinoplasty surgeons in Chicago are able to shape, shrink or enlarge a patient's nose to improve its appearance. It can also be performed in conjunction with endoscopic sinus surgery in patients with progressive sinusitis or septoplasty to correct a deviated septum. In some cases, it can treat health and respiratory problems and improve their appearance.
1. What are the benefits of a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty has several specific objectives. Some facilitate breathing and improve the appearance of the face. Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under sedation or general anesthesia. Here are some of the benefits of rhinoplasty. You are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.
Removing a hump on the nose
- Altering the bridge of the nose
- Reshaping the tip of your nose
- Resizing the tip of your nose
- Increasing/decreasing the size of the nose
2.
How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure where it can take 1 to 2 hours to get there and back home safely and without side effects.
Surgeons use one of two techniques to perform nose operations. In both techniques, the surgeon lifts the soft tissue that covers the nose. With an open nose correction, an incision is made in the columella (the tissue between the nostrils). With a closed rhinoplasty, no incisions are made in both nostrils.
The surgeon shapes bones and cartilage into the desired shape. Additional cartilage, which is needed to enlarge the nose, is removed from the septum. In patients with a deviant septum, the surgeon can also adjust the septum (the inner structure of the nose) to improve breathing.
The fabric is then draped anew and sutured. If the patient wishes to have the nostrils reshaped, this is done in the final stage of the nose correction.
At CI Plastic Surgery Clinic
along with an aesthetic rhinoplasty, we can combine Chin Augmentation in Chicago
where it results in more well-balanced facial proportions.
3. What is the Difference Between Open & Closed Rhinoplasty?
There is a difference between open and closed rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, a plastic surgeon makes an incision from the inside of the nostrils to the outside of the columella (the outer cartilage strip that connects the nostrils) through an incision.
Open rhinoplasty is easier to perform than a closed rhinoplasty because it makes it easier for the surgeon to see what is being done.
With a closed nose correction, an incision is made on the inside of the nasal passage. This is the most popular option because the scars are minimal and occur only on the inside of the nostrils.
4.
What are the Potential risks of Rhinoplasty?
As with any cosmetic or medical procedure, there are a few minor potential risks associated with rhinoplasty. Dr. Dhaval will take the time to assess your nose to explain your risks during the initial consultation. Here are some possible side effects you may encounter during the recovery period:
- Discolouration & slight swelling around the nose
- Infections if proper aftercare is not administered
- Various sensations like numbness, itchiness, or discomfort
- Some redness or scarring
- Laboured breathing (can be corrected through revision rhinoplasty)
- Nasal septal perforation
- Complications from anesthesia
5. Rhinoplasty always performed for cosmetic Reasons?
Not all rhinoplasty procedures are performed to improve nasal function. Some rhinoplasties have purely cosmetic reasons.
Blocked airways can be due to birth defects or previous injuries that impair breathing, especially during sleep. This procedure is not insured for cosmetic reasons but we will evaluate to see if it covers part or all of the costs of the operation in the event that the procedure corrects the breathing problem.
6.
Can a Deviated Septum be corrected with the help of Rhinoplasty?
A deviated septum can be corrected using a procedure called septoplasty, where the plastic surgeon in Chicago
will reposition your septum in a more centered position.
A deviant septum can also be corrected with this procedure. Since you are already undergoing septoplasty, the surgeon can also shape the outside of your nose with a rhinoplasty.
There are several advantages to having a rhinoplasty and a septoplasty at the same time. The first is that the cost of facilities and fees are much lower when combined with functional operations and cosmetic procedures. The second advantage is that cartilage obtained from a septoplasty is available as transplant material for rhinoplasty.
7. If I am not satisfied with the results, what are my options?
Most rhinoplasty procedures take about one year for the final results to be seen. The patient has to wait for some time for the skin, cartilage, and muscles to develop.
We had patients and other surgeons who came to us for rhinoplasty because they were dissatisfied with what their noses looked like more than a year after their first operation. In other cases, the harmonization of facial features can produce the desired appearance. This can mean combining a nose operation with a facial implant.
Our surgeons pride themselves on being honest with patients about the expected results and is open to realistic expectations that their nose should look natural and proportionate. This is the key to making sure you are happy with the result.
8.
When Can I See the Final Results of Rhinoplasty?
A common myth of nose job is that swelling subsides and you immediately will see your brand new nose. Of course, the swelling will dissipate, and if you look around you may see a big improvement, but who knows if the appearance will improve over time. As already mentioned, it takes about a year until the final results become visible, as cartilage, skin, and muscles develop during this time.
9. When can I resume normal activities?During the post-operative period of wound healing, you will have to avoid touching your nose. We will let you know when you can touch and massage your nose again. Most patients can return to light exercise and exercise within two weeks of surgery, but restrict activities such as cycling, sexual intercourse, yoga, and jogging.
Hold your head up for the first few days to speed up recovery. Wait until six weeks after surgery before engaging in strenuous activities, especially if you have been hit in the face in contact sports such as volleyball, basketball, or football, etc.
10. How Do You Perform Rhinoplasty?
After making incisions to gain access to the underlying bone and cartilage, Dr. Dhaval Patel can sculpt & reshape your nose’s structure as per your concerns. He reconstructs your nose using your own cartilage, which is more often taken from the septum.
The nose can be reconstructed with or without cartilage. Once the cartilage has been removed from the septum, our certified surgeon uses ear cartilage or rib grafts when he needs a lot of cartilage for reconstruction.
Hopefully, we were able to answer some of your burning rhinoplasty questions.
