Rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty) is one of the most common cosmetic operations performed worldwide. It can be performed as a reconstructive procedure to correct a birth defect, to repair an injury or a broken nose, or for purely cosmetic reasons.

       2. How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure where it can take 1 to 2 hours to get there and back home safely and without side effects.

Surgeons use one of two techniques to perform nose operations. In both techniques, the surgeon lifts the soft tissue that covers the nose. With an open nose correction, an incision is made in the columella (the tissue between the nostrils). With a closed rhinoplasty, no incisions are made in both nostrils.

The surgeon shapes bones and cartilage into the desired shape. Additional cartilage, which is needed to enlarge the nose, is removed from the septum. In patients with a deviant septum, the surgeon can also adjust the septum (the inner structure of the nose) to improve breathing.

The fabric is then draped anew and sutured. If the patient wishes to have the nostrils reshaped, this is done in the final stage of the nose correction.

       3. What is the Difference Between Open & Closed Rhinoplasty?

There is a difference between open and closed rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, a plastic surgeon makes an incision from the inside of the nostrils to the outside of the columella (the outer cartilage strip that connects the nostrils) through an incision.

Open rhinoplasty is easier to perform than a closed rhinoplasty because it makes it easier for the surgeon to see what is being done.    

With a closed nose correction, an incision is made on the inside of the nasal passage. This is the most popular option because the scars are minimal and occur only on the inside of the nostrils.

       4. What are the Potential risks of Rhinoplasty?

       5. Rhinoplasty always performed for cosmetic Reasons?

Not all rhinoplasty procedures are performed to improve nasal function. Some rhinoplasties have purely cosmetic reasons.

Blocked airways can be due to birth defects or previous injuries that impair breathing, especially during sleep. This procedure is not insured for cosmetic reasons but we will evaluate to see if it covers part or all of the costs of the operation in the event that the procedure corrects the breathing problem.

       6.  Can a Deviated Septum be corrected with the help of Rhinoplasty?

A deviated septum can be corrected using a procedure called septoplasty, where the plastic surgeon in Chicago will reposition your septum in a more centered position.

A deviant septum can also be corrected with this procedure. Since you are already undergoing septoplasty, the surgeon can also shape the outside of your nose with a rhinoplasty.

       8.  When Can I See the Final Results of Rhinoplasty?

As already mentioned, it takes about a year until the final results become visible, as cartilage, skin, and muscles develop during this time.

During the post-operative period of wound healing, you will have to avoid touching your nose. We will let you know when you can touch and massage your nose again. Most patients can return to light exercise and exercise within two weeks of surgery, but restrict activities such as cycling, sexual intercourse, yoga, and jogging.

Hold your head up for the first few days to speed up recovery. Wait until six weeks after surgery before engaging in strenuous activities, especially if you have been hit in the face in contact sports such as volleyball, basketball, or football, etc.  

       10. How Do You Perform Rhinoplasty?
