BREAST EXPLANT WITH EN BLOC CAPSULECTOMY

When a woman wants to enhance her physical appearance, there are many avenues she may want to pursue. One can be as simple as a makeover while others might include diet and exercise. Sometimes those solutions may not be enough and more involved measures are designed in order to change their image. One of the ways to enhance physical appearances is to have her breast size increased. This is known as augmentation mammoplasty or breast augmentation. The decision to have breast enlargement surgery to change or improve one’s shape isn’t made lightly. Once the choice is finalized, a woman expects a positive outcome that will make her feel beautiful and boost her self-esteem. Unfortunately, and for reasons that are not clearly understood, sometimes something goes wrong and the patient may develop a condition that would jeopardize not only her appearance but her health.

The difference in procedures is the extent of scarring. Flaps are used during a simple lift procedure. Fat transfer is used for patients who desire a more fullness over their buttock area. During the fat transfer procedure, the removed fat is placed deeply within the muscle and in many different layers to create a smooth surface without irregularities. It is common for surgeons to perform liposuction as well to enhance the shape of the buttocks.

Fat grafting has changed buttock enhancement to be a simpler procedure, performed within 1.5 hours, with minimal pain, discomfort, and recovery time. Candidates for this surgery are usually 18 years or older and in good physical health.

BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT PRE-OPERATION

If you are a smoker, your surgeon will strongly urge you to quit at least six weeks before your surgery as smoking can interfere with the healing process and the viability of the fat grafts. Also, medications that can increase the risk of bleeding should be stopped. As this surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, it’s important to arrange for transportation.

Recovery timeline

Breast implant removal with en bloc capsulectomy involves a recovery period of about six weeks for most strenuous activities and heavy lifting, with initial discomfort, swelling, and bruising resolving in the first few weeks. Normal daily activities and light work can often resume within one to two weeks, but it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s specific post-operative instructions and attend all follow-up appointments for optimal healing.

*Please note this is just a general guide. Times may vary from patient to patient. Please talk to your surgeon or patient care team if you have any questions during your recovery.

Early Recovery (First 1-2 Weeks)
  • Soreness and Swelling: Expect pain, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.
  • Limited Arm Mobility: Avoid raising your arms above your shoulders and limit activity for the first week or two.
  • Light Activities: You can typically resume light activities like showering and walking within 24 hours.
  • Work: Many patients can return to non-strenuous work within 7-10 days.
  • Restrictions: No heavy lifting (over 10 lbs), strenuous exercise, driving, or taking narcotic pain medication for at least a week.
Intermediate Recovery (2-6 Weeks)
  • Gradual Increase in Activity: Swelling and discomfort will continue to decrease, allowing you to ease back into normal activities.
  • Strenuous Activity: Strenuous exercise, especially involving the upper body, should be avoided for the first six weeks.
  • Compression Bra: You will likely need to wear a supportive, non-underwire bra 24/7 during this period to help with contour and reduce swelling.
Long-Term Recovery (6 Weeks and Beyond)
  • Return to Normal Activities: Most patients can resume all normal activities and exercise around the six-week mark.
  • Numbness/Tingling: Sensation around the incisions may gradually return over several weeks or months.
  • Scar Maturation: Scars will continue to fade and flatten over the next 6 to 12 months.
  • Final Results: The final shape and settled appearance of the breasts will emerge as residual internal swelling resolves over several months.

Quick answers to questions you may have

En Bloc Capsulectomy is a surgical procedure where the breast implant and the surrounding scar tissue (capsule) are removed together, without opening or separating them, to ensure complete removal.

Most patients need about 2–4 weeks for initial recovery, with full healing and return to normal activities in 6–8 weeks. Recovery varies depending on health, age, and the complexity of surgery.

Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, breast asymmetry, and changes in sensation. Choosing an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon reduces these risks.

A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to evaluate your symptoms, goals, and medical needs to determine if En Bloc is the right approach.

Unlike standard implant removal where the implant may be taken out first and the capsule later, En Bloc removes both in one intact piece, minimizing potential leakage of silicone or bacteria.

In some cases, after some time from the surgery has passed, capsules can form within the breast when the body is having a negative reaction to the implant. This may occur because the immune system may be rejecting the type of implant that was used during surgery. These harmful capsules can contain silicone shell fragments, silicone gel, bacteria, calcification, and inflammatory cells that have been mobilized by the immune system that reacts to various elements of the implant. Research has shown that removing the implant does not cause the capsule to disappear on its own. Once this condition is diagnosed it is very important to the patient’s health to have it surgically removed as soon as possible.

We offer breast implant removal surgery in Chicago, breast explant surgery, breast implant removal specialist surgeons in Chicago, Barrington, Oak Brook, Orland Park.

Since the sole removal of the implant will not alleviate the patient’s condition, it is important to take out the implant and the capsule together. This procedure would relieve the discomfort and health risk the patient is having and is the best option for the patient. This operation is referred to as Breast Explant with En Bloc Capsulectomy. When the operation is performed the capsule and the old implant are carefully removed at the same time. Once this portion of the operation is complete, a new implant is inserted in a fresh pocket which is located behind the pectoralis muscle. Polyurethane coated implants, which are hopefully more accepted by the body, are usually the recommended replacement implant for this procedure. Unfortunately, the cost of this operation may be more expensive than the initial breast augmentation, however, the good news is that the expected recovery time is normally about the same as the initial breast enlargement surgery.
